What started as an eye exam

Dear Family,

This morning, I took Carter to our optometrist because I had noticed he was covering his left eye while we were reading.  He told me everything was “black” but I just thought he meant blurry.  Our optometrist determined that Carter’s retina in that eye was detached and immediately got us in to a retina specialist at 1:15 in Dallas.  We just got home and have some answers but they weren’t quite what we were thinking.

The doctor decided to do an ultrasound while were there and found some things that concerned him.  We are going to Cook Children’s hospital in Ft. Worth on Friday at 1:45 for a CT scan to determine what exactly it is we are dealing with.

It could be one of two things:

1.  Some disease (I forgot the name) that causes the retina to detach.  He has zero light perception so if this is what it is, they would not be able to re-attach the retina and the eye would just stay as it is

2.  Retinal Blastoma (sp?) – which is cancer – he saw what he thinks are calcium deposits which would signal cancer.  If this is the case, they would have to take his eye to remove the cancer.

We are obviously praying that there are no calcium deposits and that he will learn to compensate for the loss of vision in his left eye.  If there is cancer, we are praying for a peace that passes all understanding and for skilled doctors.

This is the verse we prayed when we were working through adopting Carter – it is just as true now as it was then.

20 We wait in hope for the Lord;
he is our help and our shield.
21 In him our hearts rejoice,
for we trust in his holy name.  Psalm 33:20-21

Please pray for us as we wait this week that our hearts and minds don’t wander to dark places and that we can fully trust in the Lord.

Blessed!
Amy
